The pest control I remember as a kid is the Terminix man coming to our house once a month. He would get out of his truck, nod at me in the playroom as he passed and proceed to spray in every corner of our house with his metal spray can — oddly reminiscent of the tin man’s spray can in the Wizard of Oz, only slightly more sinister. A new proposal for Hong Kong tries to fit people into pipes. All the design sites are showing James Law Cybertecture’s proposal for the O-Pod, an apartment built into an 8-foot diameter concrete pipe. Matt Hickman asks, “Is this housing solution just a pipe dream?” and quotes the architect: © James Law Cybertecture via Dezeen Matt notes that these could be plunked into Hong Kong’s many nooks, crannies and alleyways. “And because these concrete micro-homes are so heavy — the pipes weigh as much as 22 tons each — they needn’t be bolted together, just plopped atop one another in a neat stack without much additional work....

You might consider urban areas to be the epitome of cool, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Heat island effect is a term that refers to higher temperatures and air pollution in urban areas, which is caused by the structures within the urban areas themselves. Urban areas are much warmer than surrounding rural areas and can be viewed as lonely islands filled with oppressive heat and extreme pollution....

Blogging like it’s 1999 might make sense for a lot of people. Low-Tech Magazine is a favorite inspiration, as it “talks about the potential of past and often forgotten knowledge and technologies when it comes to designing a sustainable society.” Kris De Decker and his team also “questions the blind belief in technological progress,” often pointing out that new ways of doing things are not always better. For the past few years, Lucasfilm has avoided the theatrical world as Star Wars has exclusively been relegated to Disney+.
